Philip K.Dick is a representative American writer of the New Wave movement in science fiction. His representative work,The Man in the High Castle won the Hugo prize for best novel award in 1963.In this book,Dick promotes the plot development with the ancient Chinese classics,I-Ching.Then he constructs the space by some postmodern writing styles, like the spatial expression of time, the multi focus narrative, intertextuality strategy and so on.As a result,he depicts a "alternate history" creatively which associates with the real world but not identical.Dick describes such a social reality in his book: the Britain and the United States were defeated by the Axis countries in the past Second World War.Germany and Japan partitioned the world and became the superpowers to govern the others. After that,Fascism and racism spread constantly in the world. Here,Dick abandons the time factor in the creation of traditional novels, and turns to the upsurge of spatial turn in the 20 th century. He blends fantasy novels with postmodern space concepts perfectly, entrusts the space as multi dimensionality and ideological connotation. This construction of space is not only a deep reflection on real issues, historical issues and Utopia issues that bases on the dual framework of science fiction and historical novels, but also an effective reflection on the plight of human life and survival crisis since the 1960 s.From this,it deconstructs the authority and authenticity of official historical narrative, transcends the themes of the Golden Age science fiction.Today this book has become a model of alternate history novels. In this paper,we take The Man in the High Castle as the research object, select the contemporary space theory as breakthrough point. What follows is a discussion about the spatial form, the internal demands of space and post-modern narrative techniques in this text though Philip K.Dick's own practical view and creation. At last,we will clarify the significance and value of space practice.
