Robert Morris is the important figure in the primary stage of Minimalism Art.From 1961,Morris started sculpture creation.His Sculptures in 60s included his so-called "Object Sculpture",and some large-scale cube sculptures.He chose some "object" that without obvious feature,and cubes,cylinders and other geometries that with easy form,what' s more,he was interested to use industrial material.However,from 1967,Morris' s work showed great transformation in figure.He did not use industrial plywood,fibreglass,mirror as his material,he started using soft material like felt,rope and threadwaste,all of these material absolutely rely on gravity to stack up in the gallery.Such works like this is called as "Soft Sculpture".As is well-known,Morris is also one of the principal critics of early Minimalism.From 1966,he started publish essays in Artforum.The essays of 1966——Notes on Sculpture 1 and Notes on Sculpture2,emphasized the importance of form factors like size and gestalt.However,in the Anti-Form(1968),which is the most controversial essay in Morris' s life,he showed his aversion to form,and express the view of“Making Process".Why there are so much contrast in Morris' s sculptures and art theory?In order to figure out the meaning and significance form in Morris' s view,the essay would proceed with Morris' s works in 60 and70' s,and consult with his critical essays,to summarize his logic behind his form contradiction.
