A Probe Into The Literati's Interest In Yangzhou Boundary Paintings In Qing Dynasty

From the reign of Emperor Kangxi to Emperor Qianglong in Qing Dynasty,a batch of outstanding painters who were distinguished for ruled-line painting emerged in Yangzhou,the famous economic and cultural center in the nation.Those painters made their own innovations in the creation of ruled-line painting,enriching the contents and expression forms of it greatly.Meanwhile,they absorbed essence of landscape painting in Song and Yuan Dynasty.They were able to not only learn widely from others strong points,but also to originate an artistic technique.The art of ruled-line painting,which had been declining for hundreds of years,managed to thrive once again,for those painters inherited the exquisiteness of traditional ruled-line painting,and infused it with powerful imagination and creativity.Although ruled-line painters in Yangzhou were professional,they possessed the basic attainments of literati,such as abundant talent and passion,lofty ambition and integrity.Making close friends with elegant scholars,those painters drew pictures that combined literati sentiment with rational spirit,resulting in a very unique aesthetic which was quite popular among the art field of Yangzhou.By analyzing painting style and aesthetic characteristic of ruled-line painting of Yangzhou in Qing Dynasty based on existing works,this dissertation aims to explore the reasons leading to the evolution of painting style from the perspective of the painters themselves,so as to excavate the inherent artistic interests of ruled-line painting,and highlight its artist value and significance.
