Listening is one of the important ways for people to perceive and learn a language.Under the influence of the examination-oriented education and traditional teaching concepts, teachers have insufficient training on students' listening skills;therefore, listening has become the weakness for most of English learners. With the development of multimedia and network technology, multimodal teaching is generally accepted by teachers in teaching. How to effectively use the multimodal input and integrate multimodal resources to promote the listening comprehension of students has an important significance. At present, the research on multimodal visual-audio teaching at home and abroad mostly analyzes the role of different input mode(such as audio and video,PPT,etc.),and studies the role of the body language,Chinese and English subtitles as well as Chinese dubbing in teaching video materials on English listening teaching, however, there is less research on the role of video types.Secondly, the research on multimodal in English teaching is mainly concentrated in the field of higher education. The application research on English listening teaching of Junior Middle School is still in the exploring stage. This study takes 120 students from 3 class in a Junior Middle School of Qingdao city as experimental objects.Among them, class A which is the control class is taught in the traditional listening teaching mode;experimental class B and class C use the multimodal visual-audio teaching mode, when choosing different video types in listening teaching, class B uses the context visuals, class C uses the content visuals.Through the teaching experiment and the results of the questionnaire survey and interviews,it is found that the multimodal visual-audio teaching significantly improves students' listening grades, which is compared with the pre-test and it is also helpful for teachers to improve students' learning ability by training the listening skills and strategies. The study also found that context visuals are helpful for students to follow and imitate the pronunciation and intonation of the videos and for teachers to design the listening teaching activities. It has positive effects on students' mastery of vocabulary and sentence pronunciation, and improve students' sense of language and voice quality.Content visuals are in favour of improving students' interests and enrich English cultural knowledge of students.Due to the rich background information, content visuals are easy to lead to the distraction of students, resulting in cognitive load and low acceptance of students. In order to better combine the multimodal visual-audio teaching with the English listening teaching practice to improve the teaching quality, this research proposes: strengthening the communications on research among teachers on multimodal teaching and sharing multimedia teaching resources to achieve mutual benefits;attaching importance to training students' listeningskills, teaching learning strategies to improve teachers' listening teaching design and management on class teaching ability;respecting students' body position and establishing teachers' leading roles to take full advantages of utilizing the entire allotted for the class. It is hoped that the research results can provide some theoretical reference and example for the practice of English listening teaching.
