Henry James wrote 112 short stories in his life.James' short novels show the style of " jamesian " which is embodied in his psychological realism,novel structure and narrative method,together with his novels,constitute the modern and post-modern narrative tone of British and American literature.This paper carefully selected eight short stories of Henry James,through the combination of narrative theory,from the following three aspects to explore the narrative characteristics of Henry James' s short stories.Chapter one is the dramatic features of narration.Henry James applied the experience gained in the creation of drama to the creation of novels,which reached James' artistic pursuit of the "authenticity" of novels.This chapter mainly discusses the dramatic features of Henry James' s short stories from two aspects: the setting of dramatic scenes and the choice of dramatic perspectives.Chapter two is the ambiguous features of narrative time and narrator.Due to the choice of narrative perspective and the obscure style of Henry James,the short stories among them present ambiguity and uncertainty.This chapter mainly discusses the ambiguity of narrative time and the ambiguity of narrators in Henry James' s short stories.Chapter three is the metaphorical characteristics of narration.There are a lot of metaphors in Henry James' s short stories.Metaphorical language is a prominent feature of "jamesian" style,and James is very good at using metaphor and symbolism to enrich his narrative skills.This chapter discusses the metaphorical features of Henry James' s short stories from two aspects: religious metaphors and metaphors that give literature "organic theory".
