Chen Moxiang's Drama Creation And Theoretical Research

Chen Moxiang(1884-1942),once called Lu,also called Moxiang,comes from Anlu Hubei Province.He is the famous Jingju playwright and Xiqu theorist.He began to appreciate Xiqu since his childhood,and he used to be an amateur Jingju actor.He is also the leading literati playwright in the Republican Period.Although most of his Jingju literary scripts are about the love between men and women,there are no lack of patriotism and warning significance.His Xiqu creation and theoretical achievements have played an important role in the history of Jingju art development.The first chapter of this article is the research on Chen Moxiang’s writing.The content of this chapter will be divided into three sections.The first section will examine the number and types of Chen Moxiang’s Xiqu scripts.The second section will summarizes and sorts out Chen Moxiang’s a great number of commentary articles and other essays on Xiqu from various newspapers and magazines.The third section will discuss the two influential fictions written by Chen Moxiang from the aspects of versions and contents,one is “Liyuan waishi” and the other is “Huoren daxi”.The second chapter mainly discusses Chen Moxiang’s Jingju literature creation.The aim of the first section is to discuss three stages of Chen Moxiang’s Jingju literature creation.The second section will be based on Chen Moxiang’s specific works,and explore the characteristics and achievements of Chen Moxiang’s Jingju literature creation from the perspectives of subjects and themes,subjective implications,structural characteristics,language arts.The third chapter is to summarize and discuss Chen Moxiang’s Xiqu theory.Based on a series of commentary articles written by Chen Moxiang,we can twitch and summarize Chen Moxiang’s theory of Xiqu script creation,and the theory of Xiqu performance,as well as his functional view on Xiqu.
