A Study On The Current Situation Of Language Use By The Youth Of Dongxiang Nationality

This essay is based on a field survey in Lockan Town,Dongxiang Autonomous County,Gansu Province.It analyzes how the local teenage rs use the Dongxiang language,their attitudes as well as their language skills.Since the implement of the Reform and Opening up Policy and continuous development of economy,seve ral facto rs including the integration of different ethnic groups,the popularization of TV,Internet and other media,the migration of population,business and trade,migrant workers,national language policy,the lack of Dongxiang language in written form and some other factors caused a fact that Chinese is now having a strong impact on Dongxiang local language.Due to the insufficient ability of naming new things in Dongxiang language,the direct use of Chinese and the poor awareness of the Dongxiang people in protecting their mother tongue lead to the phenomenon of using bilingual or Chinese.If we don't find out the problems in time and take corresponding solutions,Dongxiang language may become an endangered language.Therefore,in recent years,the use and development of Dongxiang language have arisen the attention of language researchers,and the corresponding research results have emerged.However,so far there has not been a systematic study on the language use of Dongxiang teenages.Young people are the future of the country and the nation,but also the focus of national development.It is of great significance not only to the development of the nation but also to the development of the history and culture of the whole mankind to study how teenagers use the language bearing the culture and history of a nation.The paper is based on the field survey and with the assistance of other sociolinguistic research methods.It analyzes the current situation of the use of Dongxiang language,Chinese,people s attitude towards the language,their language ability and the reasons for its occurrence.According to the survey,most teenagers are using both Chinese and Dongxiang language.Under the circumstances of fa mily occasions and other relaxing occasions,they tend to use Dongxiang language;Chinese is spoken in some public places,service centers and other formal occasions.Emotionally,they love their mother tongue;But in terms of practical value,they prefer to recognize the practicality and practical role of Chinese.In terms of mother tongue,Dongxiang language remains relatively stable.However,it is worth noticing that the younger generation masters less vocabulary in their mother tongue due to failing in balancing Chinese and Dongxiang language.Therefore,for ethnics with bilingual background,it is essential to completely understand the advantages and disadvantages of the mother tongue and the second language,which is the key to balance the two languages.This paper are consisted in seven pa rts:introduction,chapter one,chapter two,chapter three,conclusion,reference books and appendix.The first one mainly analyzes the current situation of the use of native language and Chinese by Dongxiang teenagers.The second chapter analyzes the language attitude of Dongxiang teenagers from two aspects of language development and practical application.The relationship between gender and language attitude is also expounded.The third chapter mainly analyzes the language ability of Dongxiang teenagers.The conclusion explains the present situation of language use of Dongxiang teenagers and puts fo rwa rd some Suggestions.
