On The Structure And Narration In Li Zishu's "Farewell Time"

Since Li-Zishu has published her literary works in the 1990 s,her short fictions have won various literary awards and shine in the Malaysia literary field.As her first long novel “Adieu” has also attracted many concerns and obtained several literary awards since it has been published.However,there is almost no scholar have done the detail academic analysis of this novel as same as her short fictions.This thesis mainly studies and analyzes the long novel “Adieu” through two aspects: the post-structure and spatial narrative in the novel after understanding the Malaysia Chinese literary background with Li-Zishu.The most profound impression of the first reading of “Adieu” is that the author uses a significant post-structure to layout the three distinct narratives intentionally.The poststructuralism theory has been referenced to interpret the text of “Adieu”.Especially the meaning of the numeric character “513” which pointed out the famous “13 May Incident” in the history of Malaysia as background of this novel,and Li-Zishu pushes the suspended history to the novel readers so as to complete the deep thinking and cultural narrative about the Malaysia Chinese history indirectly through her questioning closely in the novel.This part also includes interpretation of the post-structure that has used to configurate multiple narratives and create defamiliarizational expression effects.And the thesis gives a try to explore the reason of using post-structure from four aspects: the social background,the expression effects,the meaning construction,the marginal writing.In addition,the “Adieu” also shows us the conspicuous self-awareness.Li-zishu constructs several self-subjects through metafictions,deconstructs and reconstructs discourse from individual self-consciousness.The surface of the novel has an obvious Western novel style,while the deep structure shows the oriental classical aesthetic conception.In this novel,the reflection between the similar characters,the interwined falseness and trueness,the entanglement of fateful tracks,all indicate a long-lasting psychology structure of oriental culture.And finally all of them are converged in the “Tin city”,which has solidified into the eternal world of aesthetics with the history and urban space so that the writing based on personal memory and experience has been risen to ethnic group history.
