The Analysis Of Personality In The Film Of Masked Fellini's "Trilogy"

Over the "first half" of Federico Fellini's directing career(from 1950 to 1965),he mainly resorted to the form of feature film to reveal modern men and women.In the process of characterization,Fellini often unmasked his character's persona and exposed his or her true face.This method sheds light on his characters' psychological dimension and enables persona to be one of the motifs of his film.This thesis attempts to focus on the theme of persona to analyze Fellini's first three trilogies---"Trilogy of Character"(Luci del varieta,Lo sceicco bianco and I vitelloni),"Trilogy of Grace"(La strada,Il bidone and Le notti di Cabiria)and the so-called "Trilogy of Betrayal"(La dolce vita,82/1 and Giulietta aegli spiriti)y including the two short films within to explore the development of persona characterization:the emergence of persona(various social personas),the deepening of persona(the persona of isolation)and,the dilemma and solution of persona(the moment of grace,acceptance and creation,self-consciousness and independence).Then,this thesis will analyze the style of film to indicate different methods of persona expressing:the tracking shots,close-ups dialogue,acting,costume and make-up.During the production of La dolce vita,Fellini encountered C.G.Jung's psychological works,which confirmed his artistic preference and pursuit,and had great influence on his films afterwards.Therefore,this thesis attempts to refer to Jung's analytical psychology,classic psycho-analysis and other personality theory to interpret the persona and personality in Fellini's fill,such as the development of life,persona archetype,the shadow,Anima and Animus and Individuation.Furthennore,combining with Existentialism and Rollo May's thoughts,this thesis will interpret the modern characters' existential dilemma and try to pave the way for self-redemption:man's search for himself,love and will,freedom and destiny,and the courage to create.
