Born in the royal family of the late Qing Dynasty,Pu Xinyu played an important role on Chinese painting world during 20th century.He was proficient at poetry and painting,applying Northern style into Southern style mountains and gullies and skilled in landscape,flowers-and-birds,figures and beasts.He achieved great success in painting and calligraphy,called 'Zhang of South,Pu of North' together with Zhang Daqian,'Wu of South,Pu of North' together with Wu Hufan.Even after moving to Taiwan in 1949,Pu is called 'Three masters crossing the sea' together with Zhang Daqian and Huang Junbi and made great contribution in painting history.However,the prestigious painter and member of the royalty failed to attract wide attention in mainland China due to moving to Taiwan.The research on himself and his painting has not come into notice in academic world.Known as the peak of literati painting,Pu,from previous royal family,is deeply affected by Chinese traditional culture and received broad attention when starting painting.He left painting workpieces with high artistic value in subsequent career and cultivated talents,which played an important role in inheritance and development of traditional painting.Because of Pu Xinyu's unique position and lack of related research,it is necessary to study on Pu's painting works and summarize his road of painting study as well as artistic value.This thesis use four chapters to further explore Pu:the first chapter hackles developing of Pu's painting from artistic enlightenment,practice and great achievement;chapter two explores main painting theme and content.Dark green landscape,snowscape and composition within his works are also investigated and meaning and mood within painting contents such as apes,cows,devil and god are analyzed;the third chapter summarizes painting characteristics from combination of calligraphy and painting,blending of southern and northern styles,insistence of tradition and elegant and fresh painting style;the final part summarizes artistic value of Fu's works,studies on great achievement of his calligraphy and painting,demonstrates his importance and influence on painting.Based on Pu Xinyu's life,this thesis is analyzes and summarizes Pu himself,his work and the influence on Chinese painting history from development of his painting and various painting styles,providing reference and inspiration for development of modern Chinese painting.
