The Influence Of Joseph Campbell's Mythological Theory On Film Production

Joseph Campbell is a scholar who should not be neglected in the domestic academic circles.He deserves attention from his research object,research topic and influence.Campbell's mythological works can be called the mythological code of the Hollywood world.The narrative structure is widely used by scientific movies like Star Wars,The Matrix and Avatar films.Shawshank's Redemption and The Pursuit of Happiness particularly familiar to domestic audiences are also based on Campbell's heroic exploration model.Campbell's mythology can still be seen in Star Wars 7 and Star Wars 8.The movie CoCo which is awarded the 90th Academy Award for Best Animation Film,and the Zootopia applied this narrative structure perfectly.Because of the impact of Hollywood blockbusters and animated films such as Disney and DreamWorks on Chinese film market,people always live in the cultural context influenced by Campbell,but ignore the existence of this outstanding mythologist.Why can a mythologist have a tremendous impact on cultural creativity in the high-tech era represented by Hollywood?What kind of creative narrative tradition does Campbell's mythology inspire directors such as George Lucas and script theorists such as Christopher Vogler?This paper will discuss the influence of Joseph Campbell's myth theory on film production from three aspects:structure,belief and character to have a better understanding of the mythological roots behind the cultural phenomena.The first part is the introduction part.This part is mainly about the origin of Joseph Campbell's mythology theory and film production,and the current scholars' research and analysis of Joseph Campbell's literature.We hope that we can dig deeper into the inseparable relationship between Campbell's mythology theory and film production from the perspective of previous studies.The second part is also the first chapter of the text,explaining the influence of Joseph Campbell's "heroic journey" on contemporary film production in terms of narrative structure.This part will be discussed from three aspects:the first section mainly clarifies Campbell's general view on myth and heroic myth;the second section elaborates Campbell's heroic myth narrative mode:a journey,two worlds and three acts of drama.While studying its theory,it will be combined with the specific production of contemporary film production to explore its myth.The influence of theory on the narrative structure of film and television production.As we all know,things are constantly changing and developing,so is Campbell's mythological theory.In the process of film and television production,many writers and theorists inherited Campbell's "heroic journey" narrative mode and constantly improved it.Under the careful improvement of Christopher Vogler and Dan Hammond,Campbell's "heroic journey" narrative structure became the public language of Hollywood.The third section mainly explains the relationship between modern movies and heroic myths.Through research,it is found that the influence of heroic myths on movies is reflected as follows:1.Mythological elements are directly or indirectly introduced into the film text.2.The endowment of fantastic and romantic mythological experiences.3.The model of film-watching mechanism and dream-making mechanism.The heroic journey is not only an external journey,but also a journey of inner growth.So the third part of the thesis mainly explores the influence of Campbell's mythology theory on the expression of inner beliefs in contemporary film production,including the process of inner journey,the expression of inner beliefs and the writing of personal mythology.The fourth part of the thesis explores the influence of Campbell's mythology theory on the characterization of contemporary films from the perspective of "character image".The first section mainly combs the application of concentrating mythology character prototype in film and television production;the second section mainly explores the influence of the prototype characters in Campbell's "heroic journey" on the construction of aliens in Contemporary film and television production;the third section mainly explores the influence of the prototype characters in Campbell's "heroic journey".From the perspective of "binary opposition",this paper discusses the influence of the setting of the core dualistic relationship in Campbell's mythological theory on the setting of the relationship between characters in contemporary film and television production.Through this paper,we attempt to deeply understand the mythological roots behind the cultural phenomena that film impacts people's eyes from a theoretical perspective.
