As a classic dance type and a masterpiece of Mongolian dance widely recognized by Chinese audience,Dance of Cups and Bowls has not only established a typical dance image of "dance with bowls on head and cups in hands" with unique ethnic characteristics,but also realized a series of innovations in the artistic language of ethnic dance,so as to demonstrates the new spirit of the people of new China by the new artistic image of Mongolian.This dance form not only won the gold medal on behalf of the national dance cultural image of the Chinese nation at the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in 1962,but has a direct influence on the Mongolian dance that was performed in the chapter of "the Great Festival" of the music dance epic "the East is Red" written for the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the founding of new China in 1964.In this dance segment,on behalf of Mongolian dance,Wine Cup Dance was choreographed and preformed based on Dance of Cups and Bowls,which is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people all over the country in the situation of Greater National Unity.It can be said that for more than half a century,Dance of Cups and Bowls is not only a dance image,but also a typical Mongolian dance form.It has became one of the dance forms loved by the Mongols,which is widely used in the creative practice and performance of dancing art,as well as in the mass dance activities.In contrary to the folk dance forms,which are generally handed down from generation to generation,the image of Dance of Cups and Bowls,as a national cultural image of new China recognized by the world and a ethnic cultural image of Mongolian recognized by Chinese,is the fruit of the Sino-foreign contemporary dance cultural exchange as well as an innovation based on national dance image of Chinese dancers.Given this,the focus of this paper lies in Dance of Cups and Bowls,which is not only a creation process of a dance work,but also an initiation process of an ethnic dance form.Namely,this paper traces back to the initiation and evolution of the typical dance cultural image of Mongolian in contemporary China,that is,from the beginning of creation in 1959 to the performance at the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in 1964.In addition,through the study of the well-known historical process of the establishment of this dance image and dance form,this paper clarifies the cultural coding process and causes behind the generation of Mongolian Dance of Cups and Bowls and its typical dance image of "dance with bowls on head and cups in hands",as well as reveals that the new typical dance image,"dance with bowls on head and cups in hands",was shaped by the masterpiece of Mongolian dance and identified by both national and ethnic culture,which was formed under the dual influence of both national ideology and ethnic cultural conventions in the cultural exchange,shock and cooperation between Inner Mongolia and Outer Mongolia,pastoral and metropolis,folk dance culture and contemporary dance stagecraft,etc.Therefore,through the study of the initiation of Mongolian Dance of Cups and Bowls,this paper clarifies that the creation of the ethnic dance masterpiece is of great values to the significance and rules of the construction of both national and ethnic cultural images,expecting to provide some experiences and inspirations for Chinese contemporary dance circles on how to establish a brand-new cultural image of the state and nations in modern China by creating masterpieces of different ethnic dance forms.This paper consists of four chapters to explore the initiation process of Dance of Cups and Bowls,expecting to reveal the contribution and cultural enlightenment of this dance form on the basis of restoring and tracing its construction process as well as the analysis of the dance work deeply.Specifically:Chapter One entitled "Pursuit of Nationalization:Integration of Cross-border National Dance Resources in Dance of Cups and Bowls".This chapter describes the reference process of Dance of Cups and Bowls to Cup Bowl Group Dance,Chudeje and Durbert Tribe Bowl Dance in details,so as to demonstrate the historical fact that this dance form inherits the ethnic dance resources,such as the traditions of the folk Wine Cup Dance in Erdos,the shoulder skills of Turmute tribe,the traditional dance form of Durbert tribe of Mongolia and so on,which presents the excellent Mongolian dance cultural traditions contained in Dance of Cups and Bowls.Chapter Two entitled "Restriction of Nationality:Choice of Dance Culture in Dance of Cups and Bowls".This chapter focus on solving two questions,that is,"Should dancers put bowls or lights on their heads during performance?" and“Should dancers do attitude?",which illustrates the restraint power of ethnic beliefs and national aesthetics to the selection of the self-image and terms of dance in Dance of Cups and Bowls.Chapter Three entitled"Consciousness of Modernization:Innovation of National Dance Image in Dance of Cups and Bowls".Expect for pointing out that this dance form draws lessons and inherits the excellent dance cultural traditions from both Inner Mongolia and Outer Mongolia,this chapter also describes the transformation of the sensation of dance moves and aesthetic form in the aspect of dancers' chest,feet and steps of traditional Mongolian dance in Dance of Cups and Bowls,so as to indicates that a conscious innovation was made in the ethnic dance image by this dance work,which presents a new and vigorous attitude of the people of new China and the Mongols.Chapter Four entitled "Creation of Masterpiece:Contribution and Significance of Cultural Construction in Dance of Cups and Bowls".This chapter further discusses how the dance work inherits the excellent dance cultural traditions of its own nationality,as well as achieves innovation following the requirements of the cultural development of new China at meantime.Particularly,the two history events that Dance of Cups and Bowls was performed in the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students and the music dance epic "the East is Red",demonstrates that the contribution of this dance masterpiece to the new national cultural image of new China and the dance cultural image of Mongolian.Furthermore,through the exploration of the reference significance and cultural enlightenment of Dance of Cups and Bowls for the current Chinese dance stage,this paper also provides a theoretical reference for contemporary Chinese dance to establish a good national and ethnic image as well as promote to the world.
