As the representative and founder of the Hu-xiang school,Hu Hong's thought had been in decline.Through the book "noumenon and mind",Mou Zongsan promoted his philosophical thought highly,believing that it was the tertiary system beyond Cheng Zhu and Lu Wang,and that it was the only round-religion system,thus triggering a research upsurge in the academic circle.Different from the theory of principle and the theory of mind,Hu Hong holds that "nature" is the origin and existence basis of all things in the universe.Because all things are formed by gasification,and nature determines the movement and change of "qi",so Hu Hong's "nature" not only refers to human's nature,but also is consistent with Zhu Xi's "reason".So a person how to achieve good virtue,can need through a series of practice time,his understanding of inheritance and development of the Mencius,think the first time is in the present alert the conscience of things happen,and then realizing his benevolence,he will also be known as the method of "trust".However,after the realization of the noumenon,we must also expand the mind to make it bigger,which is the self-cultivation work after the knowledge of benevolence.Hu Hong's self-restraint is the expansion of the heart,is a kind of time,which is very different from Zhu Xi said before the development of the main respect for self-restraint.Although Hu Hong also thinks that "respect" is a method of self-restraint,but he called "respect" is to "raise my benevolence",is a method of self-restraint,rather than just before the development of the heart to keep the exclusive mind.In addition,Hu Hong also believes that the most important cultivation of a gentleman is to know,that is,to acquire knowledge about noumenon and morality,and to know needs to go through the case and poverty.The method of case is to aspire to and respect,the method of poor reason is lack of desire and reflexive.It seems that Hu Hong did not put forward any new methods for learning,but he insisted on the way of "Ge Zhi" is very different from that of Cheng Zhu."Observing knowledge before self-restraint" is our initial impression of Hu Hong's Congfu theory,but strictly speaking,there is no such words as "observing knowledge" or "self-restraint" in the collection of Hu Hong.So why do we conclude that Hu Hong's or even the whole Huxiang school's Congfu theory is based on this?In fact,this is Zhu Xi's argument against Hu Hong's Congfu path when he argued with the later scholars in Hunan,which means that he used the categories of "awareness" and "self-cultivation" to interpret Hu Hong's Congfu,which caused a great misunderstanding and triggered the debate among scholars on Congfu.There is no denying the fact that his understanding of the endeavor for learning time is also open at that time,the extremely profound influence on the later scholars,the disciple Zhang Shi,Hu Guangzhong,Wu Huishu and Zhu Xi,Lv Dalin debate by letters such as knowledge,and in this process,the concept of the work of Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi,several times to promote the prosperity and development of Neo-Confucianism.
