Public Opinion Research Of Confucius Institute In The United States

Dedicated to provide Chinese language and culture teaching resources and services for all countries in the world,China national Chinese international promotion leading group office(also referred as hanban),after research,in using the experience of other national language and culture promotion,presented the Confucius Institute(class)project.Since its launching in Seoul,South Korea,in 2004,the Confucius institute project has taken root in many countries.By the end of 2018,according to official statistics,Confucius institutes had 548 Confucius institutes and 1,193 Confucius classrooms in 154 countries in the world,with a total of 5,665 teaching sites.Among them,Confucius institutes in the United States had the largest number all around the world,and have done a lot of work for Chinese language teaching in the United States.However,the development of Confucius institute and challenges coexist.In recent years,some of the universities in the United States has been shutting its door to the Confucius Institutes,which has caused unfavorable public opinion.Therefore,this paper takes Confucius institutes in the United States as the research object.First,analyzes the current state of public opinion about Confucius institutes in the United States through the mainstream media reports on Confucius institutes in the United States,and then focuses on the views of the American academic community.This paper takes the research report of Confucius institute published by the National Association of Scholars of the United States as a typical case,adopts the method of content analysis,and makes use of relevant mass media theories to study and analyze the public opinions of Confucius institute in the United States.This paper takes the report of Confucius institute of the NAS as the main body of public opinion information,and takes the first three steps of the analysis mechanism of public opinion information as the basic idea to analyze and study the report.The analysis results show that the current public opinion of Confucius institutes in the United States is not optimistic,or even negative,and the development of Confucius institutes is greatly hindered.In particular,the negative sentiment among the academic and political community in the United States,represented by the NAS institute,is very strong.In this study,the paper is finally taken as the last part of the analysis of public opinion information--report writing.While presenting the analysis results,the paper makes some Suggestions on the development of Confucius institutes in the United States.
