The reward that used in military has a long history in ancient China. In Gan Shi,it is said that if soldiers obey the orders, they will be rewarded in the presence of their ancestor's temporary memorial tablets. This shows that in a very early period, the reward has been applied to military management.Tang dynasty was the peak period in the development of ancient Chinese society,in the Tang dynasty great importance was attached to the military rewards.Due to the outbreak of An and Shi's Rebellion,Tang dynasty declined from prosperity.During the havoc, the reward behavior carried out by the Tang court and the rebels in the army was greatly influenced by the social situation at that time and the situation between the both sides. This paper mainly studies the reward behavior of the Tang court and the rebels during the An and Shi's Rebellion and analyzes the change of the reward and its connections with the society at that time. This paper focuses on these following questions:First, the content of rewards of the Tang court and the rebel army. The contents of the reward is divided into two parts: material rewards and the rewards of official and title of nobility.Rewarding soldiers by “Xiang to the soldiers” was a ceremonial action of rewards, and it is different from the normal material rewards and the rewards of official and title of nobility.Due to a variety of reasons, the court of the Tang dynasty had a very serious phenomenon of abuse of honor, and lack of material rewards. In the rebel army, there was not much rewards of official and title of nobility in the rebels, nor was there much material rewards. The permission of soldiers plundering people was the main reward in the rebels.Second, the status and change of the power and source of rewards of the Tang court and the rebels during the An and Shi's Rebellion. The Tang court lost its main source of rewards, and the power was decentralized under its influence. However, the devolution of power was more and more restricted after the imperial army fought back and recovered the lost territory. The main sources of rewards among the rebels were plunder and the base Fan Yang and change with the change of the rebel supreme leader as well as the power of rewards among the rebels.Because succeeding leaders were not respected enough, they often lost control of the power.Third, the rewards behavior of both the Tang court and the rebels towards the tribal soldiers during the An and Shi's Rebellion. Both material rewards and the rewards of official and title of nobility to the tribal soldiers from Tang court represented by Uyghur are generous. To incite the tribal soldiers to revolt,An Lu-Shan gave rich rewards to the tribal soldiers before the rebellion began. But in the middle period of the rebellion, most of the rewards for tribal soldiers were allowing them to plunder people.Few direct rewards are appeared, some of the tribal soldiers dissatisfied with the rewards, resulting in defection.Forth, the punishment measures taken by the Tang court and the rebel forces during the An and Shi's rebellion,as well as the effect of the results of their reward behavior.Punishment and reward are both the weapon that the ruler use,the more severe the punishment, the more prominent the value of the reward behavior. Therefore, this part discusses the results of the reward behavior carried out by the Tang court and the rebel forces and the punishment measures carried out by the two forces.During the An and Shi's Rebellion, the rewards of the tang dynasty and the rebels had the characteristics of multiple objects and contents. But sometimes actions of kindness don't boost morale. The actions of rewards can even fuel the recipient's ambition.During the An and Shi's Rebellion, the rewards of the tang court and the rebels were also chaotic, all of which were influenced by the turbulent society at that time.
