The translation materials of this translation report are excerpted from Yang Sai's On the Meta-Category of Chinese Music Aesthetics. The book is based on the classical nine treatises such as “harmony of music;great music is silence;abandon music of Yin;no music;music is joy;natural music;music enjoyment with the people;no sad music;music is the language of the heavens” and has successively associated with the musical aesthetic thoughts of the Pre-Qin,Lao Zi,Confucius,Mo Zi,Xun Zi,Chuang Tzu,Mencius,Ji Kang, and Qing Zhu.It cited a large number of classical Chinese works as theoretical evidence. This translation report is based on the Chinese-English translation of Chapter 8 and Chapter 9,with classical Chinese translation as the focus, namely Lao Zi's and Confucius' musical aesthetic thoughts as the case study. As classical Chinese is an integral part of ancient books and there are great differences between Chinese and western languages and cultures, problems such as lack of logical relationship, cultural information and hidden meaning are encountered in the process of translating classical Chinese into English. In view of these three problems, the author starts from translation compensation, combines the strategies of compensation by integration and compensation by isolation, and uses compensation methods such as amplification, annotation, adaptation to deal with the problems in the translation of classical Chinese, hoping that this thesis can provide some reference for the translation of classical Chinese.
