Beginning with the concepts of culture and cultural default, the present thesis proceeds with the aesthetic value of cultural default in written texts and the necessity of compensation for it in translation. Then based on Newmark's categorization of texts (the expressive texts, the informative texts and the vocative texts) and the equivalent effect theory, the thesis analyzes some examples and comes to the conclusion that different compensation strategies and methods should be employed according to different text types to achieve the equivalent effect of the original texts. With regard to expressive texts, as pointed out by Newmark (2001a), the core of them is the author.
