The Role of Metadiscourse in Counsels' Questions is an academic article on legal discourse. From the perspective of metadiscourse,it discusses counsels' questions during the witness examination in the case of public inquiries in Great Britain. The combination of linguistics theory and legal discourse brings difficulties to the translation of vocabularies. The professional background of linguistics and law endows ordinary vocabulary with professional meaning, which requires translators more efforts. This paper focuses on the translation of words in such texts.Based on translation practice, the author divides the words into two general categories: they are words with linguistic connotation, common English words with legal meaning. Then through case study, the author gives some strategies for the translation of these two types of words. For the first kind of words, the translator needs to analyze the context carefully and explain their connotations in the translated versions. As to the second category, the translator should identify their legal background, and convey correct legal meaning with the assistance of information search. With specific examples and detailed discussions of words translation, the author expects to give some references to the those who will translate such texts.
