College students are in the transition stage of adolescence and early adulthood. They will experience various pressures in school life, which will induce different negative emotions and affect their physical and mental health.Researchers have noticed this phenomenon and have done a lot of research on college students' stress and depression. However, from the cognitive catalysis theory of depression, there are few studies to explore the influence of cognitive content and cognitive form on depression. In addition, most of the previous studies are based on questionnaires, which cannot overcome the social approval and other effects, and may cause interference to the research results. This paper adopts two research methods:questionnaire measurement and interview research to investigate the role of automatic thinking and rumination in the relationship between stress and depression. The first study examined the effect of stress on depression.Based on the perspective of cognitive catalysis theory,396 college students in Shanghai were collected by questionnaire method, and inferential statistics were made by using MATRIX macro compiled by Hayes et al.The results showed that: 1.Life events as stressors can significantly predict automatic thinking and depression;2.Automatic thinking can predict the subjects' depression and play a mediating role in the relationship between life events and depression;3.Rumination can regulate the relationship between automatic thinking and depression, which is shown as follows:no matter in the brooding or in the reflection condition, automatic thinking can positively predict the subjects' depression, but in the brooding condition, automatic thinking is more predictive of depression. In the second study, qualitative research method was adopted to analyze the events and emotions presented by 7 college students in semi-structured interviews, and category analysis was used to further explore the collected data. The results are as follows: 1.Different types of events will bring different effects, and changes in interpersonal relationship and intimate relationship will make subjects experiencemore negative emotions;2.The content of your thoughts in retrospect has a great influence on negative emotions;3.The styles of brooding and reflection are different in the emotions aroused by the subjects.People with higher brooding level will have stronger depression and symptoms, and the reflective style will reduce the subjects' negative emotions. This study shows that the interaction between automatic thinking and rumination and its influence on depression; The qualitative results also verified that rumination activated the original negative cognitive content, immersed in repeated thinking of events, and deepened the individual's negative emotional experience.
