Research On The French Translation Of Martial Arts Cultural Elements In The Legend Of The Condor Heroes

Legends of the condor heroes is one of martial arts novels of Mr.Jin Yong.Jin Yong created this martial arts novel based on historical themes,reflecting the disasters and sufferings brought to people by war and tyranny,criticizing the tyrannical conquest of rulers,praising the powerful and unyielding national heroes.The unique Jianghu culture,martial arts styles,martial arts schools,characters' nicknames,medicine names,and even the unique interpretation of the structure of the human body in traditional medicine are impressive in the novel.The French translation of the novel will not only enable foreign readers to appreciate Chinese martial arts novels,but also enables them to understand the profound Chinese culture.Focusing on how the martial arts culture in the Legends of the condor heroes was transmitted and the effect of transmission in the process of translation,this thesis takes the“The Concept of Cultural Translation” as a theoretical basis,analyzes the related terms of martial arts,nicknames of characters,martial arts and other symbols with martial arts culture in The Legends of the Condor Heroes.As the leader of the cultural translation school,Susan Bassnett proposed the Concept of Cultural Translation in 1980 s,which has had a revolutionary and subversive influence on the contemporary international translation studies.This Concept gives emphasis to deal with cultural factors in the process of translation and points out the importance of translating works in the cultural context.Translation is the transformation of two different languages and the collision of two cultures.Based on this main perspective,this thesis will firstly introduce the research status of Jin Yong and Legends of the condor heroes in China,the dissemination and influence of the French translated version in France as well as the translator's related situation and introduce Susan Bassnett's Concept of Cultural Translation and its concrete meanings.Then this thesis will classify and summarize the martial arts cultural symbols in the French version of The Legends of the Condor Heroes.Afterwards,it focuses on the translation strategies and methods chosen by the translator to examine the effect of different strategies in cross-cultural communication in the process of cultural translation.Through citing the concrete cases,under the guidance of the Concept of CulturalTranslation,it explains how translators can flexibly use multiple translation methods in order to achieve the purpose of cross-cultural communication.Therefore,the conclusion is as follows: in the process of the translation of The Legends of the Condor Heroes,the transmission of martial arts culture is still limited due to great differences in language and culture between China and France and different translation methods such as literal translation,transliteration + annotation,free translation,substitution and omission.In order to play a role in promoting the study of translation of martial arts novels,this thesis attempts to explore more desirable and effective strategies and methods for the translation of martial arts culture in martial arts novels.
