The dulcimer is a percussion instrument with a history of more than 400 years and is widely distributed. The dulcimer originated in Persia, the Middle East, and other regions. Then it entered China through Europe in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. In the early days, dulcimer performances were mostly accompanied by songs and operas.By the 1920 s and 1940 s,the dulcimer performing arts began a new world, forming a dulcimer genre with local characteristics. After the founding of New China, contemporary dulcimer art has entered a new period of development in teaching, performance techniques, music creation and instrument reform.Among these changes, the combination of tradition and Western technology has formed a new creative style in music creation, and many new works of the same type have appeared. These musical works differ in themes, expressions, performance skills and characteristics.Among these musical works,The dulcimer's solo“Lin Chong ye Ben”is a typical representative. In most dulcimer performances, although different performers play the same piece of music, the sensory effects they bring to the listener are different. Some performers can stir the audience, while others cannot. There are various reasons to explain the phenomena, such as the player's different understanding of music, the proficiency of playing skills, and the breadth of knowledge. In the author's view, the most significant reason is the ignoring of the breath in the dulcimer performance.Breath is the basis for regulating performance skills and mental state in the art of dulcimer playing. The control of the breath not only directly affects the mastery and application of the performance method but affects the player's understanding of the music and the expression of the music. Therefore, the penetration of "qi yun" is the advanced realm of dulcimer performance. In conclusion, the importance of breath research in dulcimer performance is particularly critical.
