Since its declaration of independence,Argentina had been in vigorous pursuit of democracy. The country's road to democracy was tortuous and turbulent where “two rises and two falls” had taken place before it came to democracy. It was until in 1983 when Raúl Alfonsín was elected President that Argentina finally made its transition from dictatorship to democracy. In retrospect,it was indeed a successful transition back in the 1980 s when the third wave of democracy was rising.Against that backdrop, democracy was the trend of the world. In addition, the US and some other Western countries were making democracy promotion a prominent aspect of their foreign policies, which created a stable international political environment for Argentina to establish democracy.Apart from external reasons, domestic factors also played a part in Argentina's transition.Drawing experience from the last two attempts to achieve democracy,Alfonsín took measures on many fronts to promote democratic governance. For instance,he made great efforts in addressing military's interference in political issues, removing obstacles to democracy.By conducting active consultations with major political parties,he created a sound political environment.Besides,he also vigorously promoted safety of Latin America, strengthened relationships with the West, uplifted Argentina's national image, etc. In post-Alfonsín era,Alfonsín's contribution to Argentina's transition to democracy has been carried forward and strengthened, which helps consolidate the country's democracy. However,as some new challenges are emerging in political party system and participation in political affairs,Argentina still has a long way to go before coming to a full democracy.
