Spatial ability,as one of the basic intelligences of human beings,is another independent intellectual structure corresponding to verbal ability. It is the basic quality for human beings to carry out productive labor and create inventions. It is also the basic skill that contemporary students must master to achieve academic achievement. As one of the main technologies for the materialization of 3D modeling results,3D printing technology is also the main way to realize the combination of 3D modeling and education.3D modeling plays an active role in education and teaching activities, and is also one of the effective means to improve students’ spatial ability. The process of learning how to build 3D model is closely related to learners’ spatial ability. How to teach and how to learn 3D modeling will directly affect students’spatial ability.Current research focuses on whether 3D printing can improve students’spatial ability, while few studies explore how 3D printing can effectively improve students’ spatial ability. This research is based on the CDIO concept of engineering and designs courses from R.J.Urbanic’s design of 3D printing learning process based on CDIO concept. It chooses a suitable course theme for iterative design and designs a 3D printing course based on CDIO concept, using design of pretest and posttest for non-peer control group of the quasi-experimental design, starting from the analysis of three components of spatial competence(spatial perception ability, mental rotation ability and spatial visualization ability). This paper explores the influence of this course on junior high school students’spatial competence by means of questionnaire, interview and work analysis. That is to say,(1)Can the 3D printing course based on CDIO concept significantly improve the spatial ability of junior high school students?(2)Based on CDIO concept, which part of spatial ability of junior high school students can be improved more effectively by 3D printing course?(3)Is there a significant difference in the effect of the three-dimensional printing course based on CDIO concept on improving the spatial ability of different gender junior high school students? These three core issues are studied.Through the above experiments, this study draws the following conclusions:(1)Compared with the traditional three-dimensional printing course, the 3D printing course based on CDIO concept can significantly improve thespatial ability of junior high school students;(2)The three-dimensional printing course based on CDIO concept can significantly improve the mental rotation ability of junior high school students;(3)The three-dimensional printing course based on CDIO concept can promote the spatial imagination ability of female students more significantly than that of male students. This study focuses on the impact of 3D printing courses on the spatial ability of junior high school students. From the needs of society, schools and individual students to enter the information technology classroom for 3D printing, combined with the cognitive and learning rules of the junior two students, refer to the CDIO concept. The 3D printing learning activity process design, developed a CIDO concept based 3D printing course, through quasi-experimental research to explore whether the course can more effectively improve students’ spatial ability, and pay attention to the impact of gender differences in this process. It brings new educational methods and concepts to the development of students’ spatial ability, and provides valuable reference materials for innovative educational new ideas.
