Resource Curse And Entrepreneurship

At present,our country is in an important period of market-oriented economic restructuring.But the continuous rapid economic development is accompanied by the continuous expansion of regional differences.From the existing literature,entrepreneurship is an important factor in the economic development of the developed eastern provinces,while the economic laggard in the backward western region is attributed to the natural resource endowment.Many scholars have examined this"resource curse" transmission mechanism from different perspectives.But few people associate entrepreneurship with resource endowments and treat entrepreneurship as an important path of "resource curse",let alone relevant empirical analysis.This paper intends to explain the difference of entrepreneurship among regions in our country from the perspective of resource endowment.It is hypothesized that the difference of resource dependence plays an important role in selecting entrepreneurship.In regions with high resource dependence,the level of human capital is low,and there are few opportunities for competition in the industry,which are all not conducive to the development of innovation and entrepreneurship.On the contrary,the regions with low resource dependence are more likely to form entrepreneurship.In other words,there is a negative correlation between resource dependence and entrepreneurship.Based on the provincial panel data of China from 2006 to 2015,this paper divides entrepreneurship into business spirit and innovative spirit considering the specific connotation of entrepreneurship.Then we study the impact of resource dependence on the two respectively.The empirical results better support the above assumption that resource dependence has a crowding-out effect on entrepreneurship.In addition,this article also analyzes two typical conduction paths about how resource dependence inhibits regional entrepreneurship.The results show that resource dependence restrains the level of regional entrepreneurship by squeezing out human capital and hindering the development of the tertiary industry.Based on results of the above research,it is necessary to re-examine the traditional economic development model which is resources-oriented.At the end of this paper,some suggestions from the policy level are put forward to solve the problem of "resource curse",which include but not limit to the reform of the financial system,the accumulation of human capital,and the adjustment of industrial structure.
