Since the eleventh century, there had been a constant war between Scotland and England. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the relationship between the two countries began to move from hostility to friendship and achieved the Union of Crowns. However, compared with the powerful England,Scotland had no right to speak in in the joint framework of the throne. As long as there were differences in interests,Scotland was subordinate to the interests of England. The Scots realized that Union of Crowns was only a means for England to control Scotland and did not bring any substantial benefits to Scotland. So strong anti-British sentiment was once again spread in Scotland.Scotland needs to reshape relations between the two countries. The difficulty of economic development had always been a serious problem faced by Scotland. At the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century, along with the rise of mercantilism in European countries, the wars of foreign countries, the failure of colonial programs, the effect of famine, and the impact of the Alien Acts of England on its economic sanctions,Scottish nationals economic system had been faltering. The economic dilemma became the most urgent, realistic and fundamental problem that Scots faced at the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries.Scotland's economic situation would be greatly changed,If it can merge with mighty England and share the economic interests of England. At this time,England was worried that Scotland would once again be in alliance with France, making it once again disadvantaged in the war against France and eager to merge with Scotland. To this end,England had made asubstantial concession to Scotland in terms of economic interests while promoting the merger with economic sanctions. After weighing,Scotland eventually believed that the merger with England would save its impending collapse of the national economy. In 1707,Scotland and England merged into the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
