As a key role in promoting “deepening the reform of the financial system and enhancing the economic ability of the financial services entity”,the development of FinTech is conducive to solving the painful points of information asymmetry and high cost in the financial industry, and improving the service quality and operational efficiency of financial institutions. Therefore, the importance of exploring the relationship between FinTech and traditional financial institutions has become more prominent. The large volume of commercial banks in the entire financial market is a key role for the healthy and stable development of China's financial industry. If commercial banks take too much risk, they may cause systemic risks. What is the current state of development of FinTech? How does FinTech affect the risk-taking of commercial banks? Does its development encourage or inhibit the risk-taking of commercial banks? Is FinTech's impact on the risk exposure of commercial banks of different sizes and different natures the same? The answers to these questions have important theoretical and practical significance for promoting the healthy development of FinTech and commercial banks, enhancing the economic capabilities of financial services, and maintaining financial stability. This paper explores the relationship between FinTech and commercial bank risk taking in combination with theoretical analysis and empirical methods.Firstly, based on the social background, this paper puts forward the internal influence mechanism of FinTech on the risk-taking of commercial banks on the basis of clarifying the connotation concept of key variables and combing relevant theoretical and empirical research at home and abroad, enriching the analysis perspective of commercial banks' risk-taking and deepening.Theoretical research on bank risk taking.Secondly, the text mining method is used to construct the FinTech development index, which portrays the development degree of FinTech and enriches the measurement literature on the development level of FinTech.Furthermore, collect panel data of 63 different commercial banks in China from 2009 to 2017,use the dynamic panel system generalized moment estimation(SYSGMM)method to quantitatively analyze the impact of FinTech on commercial banks' risk exposure, and discuss commercial banks of different scales and different natures. The heterogeneity of the impact of risk taking, and then draw relevant conclusions and recommendations, provide reference for the development of various commercial banks in FinTech, and provide empirical support for the prevention of FinTech risks and improve the financial supervision system. The research shows that:(1)FinTech not only has a transmission path to reduce the risk exposure of commercial banks, but also has a channel to increase the risk exposure of banks;FinTech affects the risks of commercial banks by impacting the three transmission paths of commercial bank business management, operational efficiency and risk control.(2)The development of FinTech has stimulated the risk-taking of commercial banks.FinTech has impacted the business environment of commercial banks. The market power premium of commercial banks has declined, customer diversion has been severe, profit margin has been sharply reduced, and intermediate income has fallen. In order to seek high returns and preemption.Market position, banks improve risk appetite and tolerance, and the sustainability and contagion of risks exacerbate the risk exposure of commercial banks.(3)FinTech has a heterogeneous impact on the risk exposure of commercial banks of different scales: under the impact of FinTech,large-scale banks have less risk-taking ability and bear greater risks, while small and medium-sized commercial banks have relatively higher risk-taking capacity.(4)FinTech has a heterogeneous impact on the risk exposure of commercial banks of different natures: the risk-taking of state-owned commercial banks is the most stable response to FinTech, followed by joint-stock commercial banks;and the risk-taking of urban commercial banks is the biggest impact of FinTech, followed by rural commercial banks.
