Luxury consumption in contemporary China is a realistic problem that the academic circles are paying close attention to.With the rapid development of China's economy and production technology,the improvement of people's income level and the continuous upgrading of consumption structure,people pursue convenient,efficient,comfortable and beautiful life,which provides a strong consumer group and market environment and other practical conditions for luxury consumption.Boston Consulting Group(BCG)and Tencent Company jointly released the "Report on Consumer Digital Behavior in China's Luxury Market"on September 26,2018,predicting that by 2024,Chinese consumers will contribute 40%of the sales in the global luxury market and drive 75%growth in the global luxury market.However,Credit Suisse said in its latest 2018 Global Wealth Report that although China's total wealth currently ranks second in the world,its per capita consumption level is still lower than the world average.Luxury consumption highlights problems such as consumption structure,consumption alienation and consumption identity,which not only involve the sustainable development of the economy,but also affect people's free and all-round development.At present,luxury goods have gradually become a symbol of some people flaunting their social status and class,while luxury consumption behavior has also become a unique way to seek communication identity in social activities.With the expansion of the scope of consumption of some luxury goods,their prices will decrease and become necessities of public life.Therefore,from the perspective of the free and all-round development of human beings,luxury consumption cannot be absolutely denied or over-affirmed.Behind the labeling of material enjoyment and symbolic consumption,the traditional way of life is gradually dismantled by the concept of "I consume,therefore I am"advocated by consumerism.The continuous upgrading of consumption structure and the dazzling variety of goods in the window have not brought positive and healthy spiritual life to consumers.People are increasingly locked and enslaved by materials and assimilated into the phenomenon of "one-sided people" brought about by cultural industry.Such consumption behavior will not only not increase the overall happiness of consumers,but also bring continuous pressure.Based on Marx's theory of human development and economic theory,this paper examines the reality of luxury consumption in contemporary China.Firstly,it introduces the research background of luxury consumption and the research status at home and abroad.Secondly,we should understand the concept and characteristics of luxury goods in the process of social development from the perspective of necessary needs,and explore its logical evolution process in historical changes.Thirdly,it elaborates the multiple social conditions for luxury consumption and its influence.Finally,it analyzes the reality of luxury consumption in contemporary China and reflects on it,and proposes ways to discard the alienation of luxury consumption in order to promote the healthy and rational development of luxury consumption in China.
