Tourism is an important way to start domestic demand, promote economic transformation and upgrading,as well as enhance urban competitiveness.Star-rated hotels,as a central part of tourism, are the major force that drives the development of China's tourist economy.Agglomeration is an inevitable trend in hotel industry development. It is objectively required for enhancing the competitiveness of regional hotels, and the core of developing regional hotels is to pursue highly efficient development of star-rated hotels. Therefore, for optimizing resource allocation and achieving sustainable development in hotel industry,an in-depth exploration of the relationships between star-rated hotel agglomeration and efficiency is significantly instructive.Based on 30provinces' panel data of China from 2000 to 2017,this paper not only measures respectively the agglomeration degree and efficiency level of China's provincial star-rated hotels through adopting Location Quotient Index as well as the DEA Model, but also examines the dynamic relationship between the two by using the PVAR Model. The research shows that:(1)From 2000 to 2017,the average location quotient of China's star-rated hotels is 1.096,and the hotels as a whole present an agglomeration trend.Chronologically, the agglomeration sees an overall increase, with an annual growth of 1.744%.From the perspective ofspatial distribution,star-rated hotel agglomeration takes on a pattern of“East > West > Central”.(2)From 2000 to 2017,the average technical efficiency of China's star-rated hotels is 0.796,with a potential improvement of 34.05% from the production frontier. The technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency of these hotels generally see a progressive but fluctuating increase, while the spatial distribution of the two shows a characteristic of “high on both sides and low in the middle”,and appears in a similar pattern with that of the agglomeration. For scale efficiency, there is a progressive but fluctuating decrease and an unevenness in space.(3)The effects of agglomeration, technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency are all positive for China's star-rated hotels themselves and there exists a self-reinforcing mechanism. There are two-way positive effects between the hotel agglomeration and technical efficiency, but such a mutual promoting effect will level off with time. The agglomeration and pure technical efficiency of star-rated hotels facilitate each other while a significant interaction exists between the agglomeration and scale efficiency. The agglomeration of star-rated hotels can boost scale efficiency, but more scale efficiency,in contrast, inhibits the agglomeration of star-rated hotels. The degree to which star-rated hotel agglomeration and star-rated hotel efficiency influence each other differs regionally.
