Against the backdrop of the difficult recovery of the global economy, the importance of linkage between countries and regions for innovation and cooperation is becoming increasingly significant.Recently, the scientific and technological innovation cooperation and exchange activities of various countries have been gaining momentum from the promotion of the “Belt and Road Initiative”.Using standardized coded knowledge to study the knowledge flow between the “Belt and Road” countries and regions through scientific papers is conducive to an in-depth discussion on the knowledge flow relationship among the innovative entities interacting in the “Belt and Road” region, and to deepen the geographical Cognition and thinking about the exchange and cooperation activities of scientific and technological innovation.Based on sorting out relevant literature such as knowledge flow, coded knowledge citation, and “Belt and Road” knowledge flow research, this study took 65 countries and 1,838 cities in the “Belt and Road” region as research samples.Six key areas were selected as the main research areas from the key scientific and technological innovation exchange and cooperation areas specified in the official documents of the “Belt and Road” initiative.Based on the Web of Science platform, the bibliographic information of relevant scientific and technological papers in the key scientific and technological fields of the "Belt and Road" from 2008 to 2018 was obtained as basic data;A tracing algorithm is developed and integrated with natural language processing tools to compute the document similarity.Meanwhile, with the help of Gephi,ArcGIS,Stata,SqliteStudio and other software, this paper explores the spatial and temporal evolution of knowledge flow in the “Belt and Road” region, and analyzes the hierarchical structure, connection characteristics, and network evolution patterns at different geographical scales. Finally, according to the proximity theory,a multi-dimensional proximity analysis framework including geographic proximity, cognitive proximity, social proximity, and institutional proximity is constructed, and the influencing factors of the scale of urban knowledge flow are measured. The conclusions are drawn as follows:(1)The total number of papers in the key scientific and technological fields of the “Belt and Road” region has accelerated from 2008 to 2018,and the activity of knowledge production in the region has increased significantly; The “Belt and Road” countries contribute 58.17% of the total research contribution. The “Belt and Road” countries occupy a central position in the research of relevant key scientific and technology fields, and have obtained knowledge contributions from outside the research area.(2)The countries' and cities' network in the “Belt and Road” region have a hierarchical characteristic, showing a significant “core-periphery” structure.Countries and cities with high volume of knowledge flow hold the core position of the network, and have played an important role in leading the evolution of the network.(3)There is obvious spatial differentiation in the network linkages of the “Belt and Road” knowledge flow networks, and the topic distribution of knowledge flow has a clear tendency of concentration. The knowledge flow linkages between countries and cities reflect a stable "triangular" spatial structure, and the high-level linkages, like linkages involving national capitals, form the spatial framework of the network.(4)The knowledge flow networks of different scales show clear characteristics of community aggregation, and the community aggregation in various periods is driven by different factors. The evolution of country communities and city communities has a certain extent of synchronization. The linkages across the boundaries and the strengthening of existing linkages have become important features.(5)The scale of knowledge flow between the “Belt and Road” cities is positively affected by multi-dimensional proximity and the knowledge production capacity of cities themselves.
