Abstract/Summary:
Results of computational investigations of a single round pipe jet with a coil insert in crossflow are presented. The coil insert had constant diameter and pitch spacing. The ratio of the coil diameter to the pipe inner diameter, d/D, was 0.1, and the ratio of the pitch spacing to the pipe inner diameter ratio, p/D, was 1.0. The coil length to the pipe inner diameter ratio, L/D, was 4.0. Three different mean velocity ratios, R, of 0.9, 2.0 and 4.0 were investigated. Results show that the coil insert enhances diffusion through increased vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy. In crossflow, mixing is increased as the velocity ratio is increased. The jet flow velocities decay faster and jet trajectory widths are increased. Vorticity penetrates farther into the crossflow and travels farther downstream with the coil insert. Results also show that the turbulent kinetic energy of the coil-inserted jet decays faster in the crossflow.
