Abstract/Summary:
A model to describe the growth of nanoclusters in silica via ion beam synthesis is introduced. It is shown, by using both kinetic Monte Carlo and rate equations schemes, that the implanted species go through nucleation, growth, coarsening and fragmentation during implantation, leading to a steady-state size distribution shape that agrees with those observed. The model allows one to understand how experimentally accessible parameters determine the nanocluster size distribution.
