Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the prevalence of osteoporosis related education, screening, and treatment provided to patients sustaining a fragility hip fracture. Additionally, the relationships were examined between each of the following variables and whether or not the patient received screening and/or treatment for osteoporosis: (a) gender, (b) age, (c) ethnicity, (d) place of residence (independent vs. assisted living), and (e) history of previous fracture. A review of the medical records of patients admitted to a rural teaching hospital for the treatment of a fragility hip fracture was conducted. After exclusion criteria, a sample size of 90 was obtained. The data revealed that no patients received screening or education regarding osteoporosis. Treatment modalities were recommended to 24.4% of the sample. The data revealed only one statistically significant association between the studied variables and whether the patient received patient treatment for osteoporosis. The study found that patients with a previous history of fracture were more likely to receive osteoporosis treatment.
