Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research project is the creation of a critical edition full score of Florent Schmitt's 1933 work, Hymne funebre, op. 46. Schmitt composed six works for concert band: Dionysiaques, op. 62; Selamlik, op. 48; Marche du 163e R.I., op. 48, no. 2; two youthful marches for which he left instructions never to be published; and the focus of this document Hymne funebre, op. 46. While Dionysiaques has entered the core repertoire for its virtuosity and compositional craft, the others have been neglected through time. Schmitt composed Hymne funebre, op. 46 in 1933 for tenor soloist, four-part mixed chorus, and wind band. The work was premiered by La Musique de la Garde Republicaine in 1933 at the funeral of French Prime Minister Paul Painleve. This modern performance edition was created from a holograph score of Schmitt's manuscript obtained from La Bibliotheque nationale de France. The research paper addresses the editor's orchestration decisions and also includes a list of errata corrected during preparation of the critical edition full score, a translation of the text, and a brief biography of the composer.
