Abstract/Summary:
The construction of moral judgments in the presence of the specific negative emotions anger, sadness, and disgust compared to neutral feelings, was investigated in a 4 x 2 factorial between-subjects design. Two hundred and twenty-three participants gave ratings of moral severity in response to 5 vignettes describing moral transgressions. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two orders of vignette presentation and one of four different conditions to elicit anger, sadness, disgust, or neutral feelings by viewing film clips. Neither emotional condition nor order was found to significantly influence moral ratings of the vignettes. These unexpected results shed light upon the methodological limitations of using film clips to produce effects dependent upon misattributing the source of morality-relevant feelings.
