There are many stereotypes associated with certain ages. I discuss the short story "The Thirtieth Year" written by Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann about the protagonist struggling with an identity crisis brought about by the stigmas of turning thirty. I evaluate Bachmann.s life and the autobiographical nature of this story as well as her choice to write about a male protagonist rather than a female protagonist. Further, I examine the character as he questions his identity and himself in relation to society.s expectations associated with age thirty. |
