Abstract/Summary:
Leaders within a corporation are tasked with maximizing team effectiveness to remain competitive. A training intervention was provided for corporate leaders to increase their emotional intelligence (EI) and to support leaders with the ability to bring to the workplace increased employee effectiveness through cooperation, motivation, and productivity within work teams (Johnson & Indvik, 1999). The contribution of this research provided the implementation information for an emotional intelligence training program that supported the development of emotional intelligence and was practical within the work environment.;The design of the research was a mixed study design. The quantitative results were pre and post measurements that were taken to determine if the 10-week training intervention was effective at improving a leader's emotional intelligence, hence increasing the leader's emotional intelligence functioning. The leaders participating in the study were from functional areas within the corporation that included engineering, finance, operations, sales, communications, and human resources. The results of the research proved the hypothesis that the overall emotional intelligence was statistically significantly improved through the training of emotional intelligence. The subscales of emotional intelligence, interpersonal, stress management and general mood, showed significant improvement, however, the intrapersonal and adaptability subscales within the Bar-On model were not statistically significantly improved. There was no statistically significant gender effect found within this study. In addition to the quantitative data, qualitative data was collected to ascertain the level of improvement that the leader perceived regarding personal emotional intelligence development. The qualitative comments reveal a perceived improvement in interpersonal abilities. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected regarding the design of the training to identify improvements for consideration for future emotional intelligence training and adding to the body of knowledge. The quantitative and qualitative results were favorable overall to the training design used within the research.;The theoretical contribution of this research was to further the body of knowledge within the field of emotional intelligence by providing a prescribed training design and implementation model that would yield an anticipated improvement in a leader's emotional intelligence within a defined amount of time and resource investment. Further research and training design modifications are recommended to test the level of improvement that can be gained by emphasizing specific elements, such as peer coaching, that the research results highlighted as effective for emotional intelligence development.
