Abstract/Summary:
This study used the Bar-On Emotional Quotient-Intelligence (EQ-i) to examine differences in the emotional intelligence of a convenience (accessible) sample of 45 leaders and non-leaders of three Greek-letter governing councils attending undergraduate courses at a mid-sized Southern University while controlling for gender and year in school. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis of the study, which was: There is no difference in the emotional intelligence of leaders of student organizations (defined as presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, or treasurers) and followers in student organizations (defined as all others). The demographic variables of gender and year in school were used as control variables because of their relationships with the leader/follower designation. Results showed that what differences existed between leaders and followers were accounted for by year in school, with more advanced year in school corresponding to greater EI. Both leaders and followers in the present sample showed relatively low levels of EI.
