Comparing fundamental frequency within and among speakers of Hindi and English

Abstract/Summary:
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate F0 and SFF variation across and among Indian-Hindi speakers and Anglo European American English speakers.;Method. Thirty age matched male Anglo European American and Indian-Hindi speakers participated in the present study. All speakers exhibited normal voice, speech, and language as judged by a speech language pathologist. Their F0 and SFF values were analyzed and compared for sustained /a/, reading and monologue.;Result. F0 of sustained phonation for the /a/ for Indian-Hindi speakers was compared with F0 for the /a/ for the Anglo European English American speakers, there was no significant difference between the two groups. All other comparison among and across speakers there were statistically significant difference.;Conclusion. Sustained phonation of /a/ across both groups was not significant suggest similar anatomical and physiological mechanism of vocal fold vibration at the vowel level. SFF may or may not vary with language.
