Abstract/Summary:
In this paper I will focus on the aesthetic concept of Yi. Through in-depth exploration of issues such as the meaning of "implication" and "image" within traditional Chinese aesthetics, and the relationship between these concepts the relationship between Yi and dance, and the question of how does dance embody "image" and other. I will analyze the features of Lin Hwai-min's Yi inspired dance works. I will seek discover in what special way does he reflect Yi. What factors go into his creation of Yi-type dance works, and why have his works gained recognition and love from audiences both in China and from the world at large. My research focus on Lin Hwai-min's Yi inspired art, his Yi infused dance works, and the inspiration behind them.;To find the "roots" of Lin's dance works is important, but in order to research on "roots" understanding the the "branches" is also necessary. In the first section, I will provide a brief introduction to Lin's classical dance works, the changes in Lin's stylistic evolution. In the second section I will explain Yi- as not only an important category of traditional Chinese aesthetics, but the foundational aesthetic purpose of traditional Chinese art by pairing the "performance Yi" with the "aesthetic Yi", I will be able to explore the deep meaning of "imagery" in Chinese aesthetic culture, and distinguish between the confusing concept of "Yi Xiang" (imagery) and "Yi Jing" (artistic conception). From there I will go into "Dance -Yi". The special nature of dance is my main focus, and this will be followed by analysis of how dance performs "Yi" and how audiences accept "dance Yi". Through analysis on Lin Hwai-min's "Yi"-type dance works I will attempt to explicate the very "oriental" image within his dance works. I will focus on five factors such as body language, composition timing, costumes, music and stage design. While I will attempt to uncover the unique performance qualities of Lin's "Yi"-influenced dance works, the more important point is to discover what can be learned from studying the roots of Lin's works. Consequently, the last chapter is divided into two parts: first I summarize Lin's goals in emphasizing in his "Yi"-type dance works by examining both content and form. In the second section, I look at the influence of Lin's "Yi"-type dance works and the art it has helps spawn.
