Abstract/Summary:
Examining the works of Ernest Hemingway and the role of the feminine character comprises an exploration of the author's and his characters' collective identity. His flawed characters' continual struggle to live the code leads to a questioning of their aesthetic and psychological, even mythological creations. Although Hemingway portrays many of his female characters as static and seemingly stereotyped, some are developed with a sympathetic, even admirable component, suggesting that the essentially solitary writer actually endeavored to protect his sensitivity, a latent goddess within, with the creation of his own archetypal hero code. Therefore, by analyzing several Ernest Hemingway texts through a lens of Jung's "cathartic patterning" and Campbell's mythological tracking of the muse, one can illuminate Ernest Hemingway's female characterizations as subconscious projections that reveal a "gender bending" depth of his self and his art.
