Abstract/Summary:
This thesis attempts to explain the sources for failures in the humanitarian aid system. It breaks down humanitarian relief into two main categories, that of aid during natural disaster and that in complex emergency. In order to better understand the field of humanitarian aid the thesis first defines the basic terms used in humanitarian aid and discusses the theories of global civil society and global governance. It then covers the various aspects involved in international humanitarian aid, including the differences in humanitarian aid during natural disaster versus complex emergency. There are two case studies evaluating humanitarian aid in the thesis. The first case study is of the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, and the second of the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. By analyzing these two case studies, the thesis attempts to find patterns in failures of the humanitarian aid system. Possible solutions will be offered to enhance the humanitarian aid system in the future.
