Previously, historians have detailed many different aspects of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger's foreign policy. These include studies about their handling of the Vietnam War, securing a detente with the Soviet Union, and opening up relations with China. One area of study that is sorely neglected is Latin America.; This study will show how Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger initially accorded little attention to Latin America on their foreign policy agenda. However, two events that took place in 1970, the Cienfuegos Nuclear Submarine Base incident, and the election of socialist Salvador Allende in Chile, forced Nixon and Kissinger to concentrate on Latin American affairs. This study will show that Nixon and Kissinger acted in Latin America to stop the growing threat of Soviet influence in order to protect the policies of the United States, while maintaining a proper balance of power to pursue a detente with the Soviet Union. |
