Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the application of digital evidence to criminal investigation. Data is collected constantly on individuals as a consequence of a lifestyle contingent on digital devices. Digital devices have exploded in popularity in recent decades and are a seamless part of people's lives. Locard's exchange theory of evidence applies to the digital evidence generated in connections, communications and sharing between suspects, victims and witnesses. This digital evidence is generated by all manner of devices such as computers, cell phones, and gaming consoles. It can also be collected by commercial entities such as casinos, web sites or even in routine shopping and driving activities. Digital investigation is a field that demands some level of technical expertise and frequently, laboratory examination of media and devices.
