Abstract/Summary:
This study examines what factors contribute positively to student retention in distributed learning at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). Distributed learning is a steadily growing method of providing education to local and remote locations in North America. The qualitative action research methods used in this study included three focus groups consisting of staff and students within NAIT's distributed learning programs. The study addresses issues and potential solutions that NAIT developers should implement to maximize student success in programs currently offered at NAIT and planned for in the future. The findings indicate that course design, student orientation, communication, and course format are vital to student success. This study conformed to Royal Roads University's ethical policies, procedures, and research requirements.
