| Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine burnout levels of undergraduate athletic training students to determine if burnout levels were dependent upon student's year in the program, gender, and in season sport assignment status.; Methods. A descriptive research study was conducted using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS). Subjects consisted of 124 undergraduate athletic training students studying at six CAAHEP-accredited schools in western Pennsylvania, that completed the MBI-HSS survey one time during the middle of the spring semester.; Findings. Burnout levels were found to be dependent on year in the program. Burnout levels were not found to be dependent on gender or sport assignment status. Additional tests found no further significance.; Conclusions. Students in the junior year of the program are three times more likely to suffer from a high degree of burnout. The results from this study suggest that the junior year of the program is the most stressful. |
