Abstract/Summary:
Distributed projects are increasingly dominant in high tech industries such as aerospace, software and telecommunications. Over the years, economical and technological changes have opened up new possibilities for organizations to tap into specialized resources around the world, and to gain access to emerging markets. However, distribution remains a major challenge for the collaboration in the project team.; Requirements engineering is one of the processes that can be impacted by the dispersion of the project team. Although it has a fundamental role to play in the system development, as of today, only a few studies have been conducted on this process. In order to have a better knowledge of this subject in a distributed context, a field study has been conducted in conjunction with CAE Inc., a leading provider of simulation and integrated training services for civil aviation and defence customers worldwide. The present research studied the actual CAE requirements engineering process and proposed some modifications to adapt it to distributed teams. Tools like modelling functional requirements using UML have been used to achieve this goal.; Results show that on the one hand, the proposed process complies with the constraints of the distributed project team. On the other hand, the functional requirements modelling leads to a better system requirements specification. Eventually, this helps lead to a better match between the system developed by the project team and customer needs.; Keywords.
