Because of its importance to human survival, food should not be produced and distributed in a system that rewards efficiency and profit but rather in one that rewards collaboration, trust, and communication. Therefore, an alternative food system needs to be investigated.;The community garden, one type of community can offer a place where the food is produced using ecologically sustainable methods and distributed in a socially just manner. However, it is unclear if the community will be able to be an important component to an alternative food system.;The following paper puts forth a framework for evaluating a community garden that can be used to help a community garden program succeed and be an important component of an alternative food production and distribution system.;Two gardens in the Southside of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania will be used as case studies for the application of the framework. |
