Relationship between Safety Climate and occupation accident in Hong Kong Construction Industry

Abstract/Summary:
Background: Occupation accidents in construction industry has always ranked top by industry level. Though the government has put huge amount of resource in the past decade, the result is still not satisfactory. The numbers of industrial accidents in constructional industries constantly are over 3000 in a year. The purpose: This paper is to investigate the status of safety climate of Hong Kong construction industry and to reveal the relationship between safety climate and occupational accidents. Most contemporary safety studies focus on the post accident analysis and ignore the importance of preventive idea in the safety practices. Methodolog: it is quantitative approach using questionnaire. Randomly select 5 construction sites across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. Individual worker is selected by random sampling. 495 questionnaires received out of 576 questionnaires. The response rate is 85.9%. Result is analysis by SPSS. Conclusion : no evidences show that occupational accident is correlated to demographic data [age, gender, martial status]. Safety climate especially 1) Safety awareness and competency; 2) Management Support; and 3) Safety Training shows negative correlation with occupational accidents.
