Abstract/Summary:
Current trends within social research utilise concepts such as hegemonic masculinity and patriarchy specifically as indicators of men's access to power and wealth. This has become known as the patriarchal dividend. Traditionally the way to critique patriarchy has been to highlight men's unequal access to capital and power and use this critique as the basis for its elimination. This critique is only one part of the issue surrounding patriarchy, however, because it only focuses on the positive consequences for men and its negative effect on women. This analysis is incomplete as it neglects to explore the negative impact of the patriarchal dividend on men.;This thesis will provide another set of reasons and criteria for men and women to combat patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity. I hope that the findings of this research will provide men with greater incentive to move towards gender equality and live more fulfilling and meaningful lives, free from the shackles of the paradox of patriarchal power.;My thesis is a quest to better understand the costs associated with the patriarchal dividend. My investigation focuses on elite men in Saskatchewan. This study utilizes life-history interviews of a number of elite men in Saskatchewan, focussing on various stages of the interviewee's life. The questions focus on work, career, leisure, friendship, sports, violence, risk in modern society, and attitudinal questions regarding contemporary society. I chose to study elite men because they derive the greatest economic and sociopolitical benefits from the current system of white patriarchal capitalism in the form of the patriarchal dividend.
