Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative action-used research project examines how people consultants at Trillium Health Centre (THC) can be deployed to develop leadership capacity and provides a framework for supporting transformational consulting regionally. Participants, comprised of THC people consultants and management, explored various concepts of capacity, systems thinking, organizational change, and consulting through interviews, a survey, and focus groups. Major findings were that building leadership capacity is essential, a diverse set of competencies is rewired, mentoring and coaching are enablers of leadership capacity, clients' business must be integrated, people consultants are understood differently across the organization, and formal development of learning opportunities is required. Recommendations include defining and developing competencies, the consultant structure and key roles, a brochure on people services for revenue generation, a mentorship program, and a community-of-practice learning approach. Future research possibilities include differentiating between macro and micro consultant competencies, and leadership capacity's impact on organizational culture and environment.
